Aren’t Pinterest finds great? Well, just before Christmas I came across a puff pastry Nutella Christmas tree and knew it had to be made! So we did just before breakfast on Christmas morning. While fiddly at times, it made for an unforgettable breakfast experience. With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching we thought we would try another special version using heart shapes instead; using exactly the same method.
There are plenty of tutorials and recipes for making a puff pastry Nutella Christmas tree, and they make for an easy and delicious winter breakfast treat! All that’s necessary to create one is:
Puff Pastry in 500g rolls.
Pre-heat your oven to 190degC. Once out of the fridge, take time for your pastry to come to room temperature before taking it out and setting your Nutella on top of the radiator so it will melt slightly, this makes spreading it much simpler!
Spread out a puff pastry sheet on your worksurface and cut into two equal pieces. Spread one half with slightly melted Nutella before laying the second half over it for easy assembly.
Carefully draw your heart shape on pastry, taking care to cut through both layers. Be wary that this process may become slightly sticky; once complete, discard excess pastry as necessary – we twisted ours into shapes before baking alongside our Nutella heart!
Utilize a sharp knife to score down both sides of your heart, 3 cms into it from top to bottom. Twist each piece once.
Brush the heart with the beaten egg and bake in the oven for approximately 20-25 minutes until lovely and golden-brown. Sprinkle icing sugar as desired before enjoying!
